If you like Cancer Bats, you’ll love Disgust by Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys.

Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifey’s Disgust is half an hour of high-octane punk metal that sits with one foot comfortably in each camp. The rhythm section are very much skate punk, with rumbling bass and forceful drums while the guitar work is way more metal, with classic thrash riffage running through the whole record.

Victory Of Death opens with confidence, the vocal delivery strongly reminiscent of Cancer Bats with screams that are absolute throat shredders. Initial Wastage is more of a mid-tempo lumberer, Act Your Wage is a tearaway punk number with thrash influences worn on sleeve, and Final Kindness has fantastic, swaggering riffs. Disruption has the angsty, grungy edge of The Distillers, Over Me erupts into something close to black metal with nasty vocals, and Spit-Wine is built for hurling yourself around a circle pit with a banging solo. Corpse Fauna has evil riffs and vocals edging towards Arch Enemy and Cannibal Corpse territory, and Deeper Known closes the record with guitar that could have come straight off an Alkaline Trio record. On first listen Disgust sounds like a record with a singular sound, and every track does follow the same formula of punk plus metal plus throat shredding, but the influences running through it reveal an enormous tapestry of different eras and subgenres. There are plenty of punk records, plenty of metal records, and plenty that sit between the two, so what separates the great ones is an ability to sound huge without being overproduced, with a grit that comes from the performance rather than the production desk. Disgust will fire you up and give you a definite energy boost. On the surface it’s a collection of straightforward and very effective screamers, but dig under the hood and you’ll see different eras and weapons being used with knowledge and taste from a deep and varied background of heavy music.
