If you like Peaches, you’ll love HARDBODY by deBasement.
Obnoxious, face-screwing, head-twisting EDM where every synth is trying to blast your head off has been done to death in a thousand festival fields, and yet deBasement make it feel completely fresh because of the vocals. Most rave music relies on wafting, ethereal trance vocals designed to float above the production so it doesn’t have to compete with it. Alli Logout does the exact opposite, trying to be just as obnoxious as Margo XS’s swaggering production, matching her aggression with more aggression in the all attitude tradition of Missy Elliott, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B.
The vocal hooks and the driving synths are constantly competing to be more vile than each other, opening the EP with beefy synths that twist your head on HARDBODY. STAY IN UR LANE has way more bounce, faster than normal house with tons of attitude. deBasement are taking tremendous influence from the fidget house of Crookers, Hervé and Jack Beats while also managing to also sound contemporary. PRESS ON ME is more trap-adjacent staying suspended in the air, and CUT THE LINE might be the finest moment, taking you through the narrative of a night out in the tradition of Green Velvet’s La La Land with a monologue over relentless production, both funny and enormous. Given how many times we’ve all heard the tropes, modern rave records are at risk of becoming background music, but deBasement have far too much personality. It would be a decent enough EDM record without the vocals, but the constant competition between the two members makes it a real winner. Rave music in its original incarnation was queer and dangerous, belonging to people on the margins, and deBasement have that baked into their DNA with attitude and leather, reasserting queer people’s right to be at the absolute front of the rave. Forget the main stage: deBasement belong on a tiny boat out at sea with twenty people and no rules.
